Not to be confused with the similarly named star anise which has a much stronger flavour, anise seeds are the crushed seeds of the anise plant. This spice is widely used in Middle Eastern, Italian, German, Indian and Mexican cooking. Anise has a liquorice taste that is sweet, mildly spicy and very aromatic.
